Gilray Fountain is also commonly known as the "spirit of Napier". The momument was built in 1971 from a bequest left by Dr Thomas Gilray, a prominent Napier citizen. The 3.6 metre tall statue symbolises Napier rising from the ashes after the 1931 earthquake.
